If your senior loved one is hoping for a New Year’s Eve celebration that stands out from years past, there are a variety of fun, unique activities the two of you can participate in together. The staff at Home Care Assistance, a leading provider of in-home care Mississauga families trust, has a few creative suggestions for ringing in the New Year.
Preparing and Sampling Favorite Meals
Ask your loved one what his or her favorite meals have been over the past year and prepare sample plates of each of those meals to eat together on New Year’s Eve. This activity can also include a fun shopping trip and some time cooking together.
Celebrating Other Cultures
Ask your loved one about his or her favorite foreign country he or she has visited and build a New Year’s celebration around the country’s culture. Prepare an appropriate meal and find a website showing the New Year’s celebration from that country so you can watch it together. Your loved one can also share photos and personal memories from when he or she visited that place.
Reliving Past Celebrations
Find out what has been the best New Year’s Eve so far for your loved one. Locate footage of the Times Square celebration or Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve from that year and watch it together. If your loved one is able, make party hats together that reflect his or her memories of that time.
Making Resolutions into Bird Treats
Ask your loved one what his or her New Year’s resolution is going to be. Using maple syrup, help him or her carefully write the resolution on a board and then sprinkle birdseed onto the syrup. When it dries, hang it outside so your loved one can watch the winter birds enjoying his or her resolution treat.
Listening to Classic Songs
Find out the top songs for the first 30 or so years of your loved one’s life, download them, and have them ready. Play a game where you ask your loved one what the most popular song was each year and offer three choices. Have a prize ready for each one he or she gets right. Afterward, play the songs and enjoy the memories.
